A personal story on Mother’s Day

In this week’s blog post, I want to honour mothers for Mother’s Day. In particular I want to share with you stories about my dear suegra (mother-in-law). Her name is Helen and she’s a spectacular woman who has helped me so much on my journey of mothering and teaching.

Helen was a teacher for 42 years. Imagine that! She taught at the primary school level. She shared many stories with me about teaching. Helen told me that her favourite grade to teach was grade 2. Aawww. The kids are starting to learn to read at that age and are so curious.

I have been with my husband for almost 19 years and throughout all this time, Helen and I have spoken on the phone fairly regularly. We would have these long chats about life, raising children, working etc. We would laugh and laugh. Helen used to say that it was good to have a good belly laugh. She would also say that todo es mejor en el exterior, ya sea un pedo o nuestras lágrimas. (Everything is better on the outside than inside – be it a fart or a good cry.) hahaha!

She’s going to be 88 years old next week. Sadly, she has advanced dementia. I miss our long chats.

It’s impressive that Helen became a teacher and taught for so long. She was a true professional and she inspires me to continue on my own journey of teaching. I love teaching children and adults and help them become fluent and speak with ease.

As I reflect on my own mothering journey with its ups and downs; I realize how important it is to remember and enjoy las memorias (the memories).

And if you are a mother, I want to wish you a very Feliz Día de las Madres!!!

Te amo Helen!!

Nuera (your daughter in law),
