3 actionable quick tips to improve your Spanish
We’re skipping our regular word challenge this week as I want to share with you 3 great tips that you can implement immediately to start improving your Spanish.
Quick Tip 1: Passive listening
Problem: I’ve tried listening to podcasts/videos before and I am not sure I am really learning anything?
Solution: YES! Even if you are a beginner, listening to podcasts, YouTube videos or Netflix for only 10 min a day truly increases your Spanish comprehension. It’s also great for practicing your pronunciation as you can even repeat new words or expressions you hear.
Passive learning is proven to be very effective when learning a language. Put that podcast on in the background while you commute or when you do the dishes! Don’t get discouraged if you understand less than 25% of what is said (even less! 😉). Keep at it and stay consistent! Repetition is key to start understanding the language.
Quick Tip 2: Teach someone else
Problem: Huh? You are telling me to teach someone else when I know very little?
Solution: YES! Even if you are at a beginner level. Teach 3 people (your spouse, your neighbour, your co-worker, etc.) how to greet someone in Spanish, say hello, goodbye, thank you, etc. We improve faster and our brain absorbs the language much quicker when we teach others no matter what level we are at. Keep doing this and you will see quick results… AND your confidence will sky-rocket!
Quick Tip 3: Talking
Problem: It’s hard to find people to talk to.
Solution: Talk out-loud to yourself in front of a mirror or as you are preparing to go to work. Walk around your house and narrate what you are doing in the present moment if you can, even if it’s saying words you know out loud such as coffee, chair, breakfast, etc. Challenge yourself to 3 new words every day and eventually try 3 new phrases.
My students have had much success with these tips. It only takes a few minutes of practice every day for you to see a great difference in your language improvements!
